Laser Treatment of Scars, Laser Correction of Uneven Skin Texture
Did a wound after an injury or after an operation not heal properly? Does it disturb you that you cannot dress up the way you would like because you have to hide a scar? Or are you going under surgery and wish to prevent hypertrophic scar formation that you are predisposed to? We, the specialists at the Cosmetological, Dermatological and Aesthetic Laser Centre in Szeged, know the solution.
Several methods have been developed to make scars look more pleasing. However, it has been and still is a great challenge, and, on many occasions, impossible to remove the different types of scars. They can be improved by different creams or patches that soften the skin, are anti-inflammatory and prevent scar formation; micro crystals can be injected into the scars or cryotherapy can be applied.
Recently, different laser procedures have also proved successful in scar treatment; thus, the process and size of scar formation and the appearance of scars already formed can be corrected. Atrophic, retracted scars can be improved either by ablative laser dermabrasion which is identical to deep peel, or by non-ablative laser technologies (pulsed dye laser, infrared lasers) that cause no scars. By intense collagen synthesis, the scarred skin surface becomes more even; however, clinical progression appears only after several months.
The best results can be reached on newer scars. In the period after the removal of sutures we can already begin the treatment of the tissue which still contains multicellular components and vascular formula. If a scar has turned completely white, it is hard to improve. In such a case, we can usually decrease pigmentation or flatten the scar. In case of old hypertrophic scars, keloids, scar-plasty shall be immediately followed by scar treatment.
As early as in the process of wound healing, during scar formation, soft laser can be applied. Surgical lasers and IPL-technology can be applied to reduce the volume of the scars already formed. Scars from previous operations, inflammations or acne can be corrected with Cynosure Cynergy Multiplex Laser, Erbium:YAG or Carbon-Dioxide Laser and IPL (Ellipse).
The unique technology of Cynosure Cynergy Multiplex Laser can prevent hypertrophic scar formation after surgical operations if the treatment is started on the day of or within one week after the removal of sutures.
FAQ
Can laser be applied for all types of scars?
This procedure is dependent on several factors: on the colour and type of the skin, the type of scar and how long ago it formed. To find these out, the dermatologist will perform scar diagnostics and afterwards, it is possible to set up a personalised treatment plan. Red, sensitive, itchy, raised scars usually react well to multiplex laser treatment.
If a scar can be treated, can it disappear completely?
Unfortunately, even with laser treatment scars cannot be removed completely. However, the aesthetic appearance of the skin can be improved greatly. The earlier the patient undergoes laser treatment, the better the scar can be treated.
